During a recent family vacation to the great state of Texas, I had the opportunity to explore one of the weirdest cities in America: Austin, Texas. After many recommendations and hearing great things about Austin, I was really excited. I was even more stoked to know that Austin has been compared to Portland again and again because of its weirdness.
Lots of my friends have referred to Austin as “It’s just like Portland, but with no rain.” In the few hours that I spent in Austin, that’s exactly what it was! And boy, was it hot – and apparently it gets even hotter. We’re talking rays of burning hot sunshine shining down on your back, which of course I complained about but it sure was lovely compared to the subzero winds that just left the Midwest.
Austin is definitely a city that I will one day return to. I got to wander through their Art City Festival which featured artists from all around America and different media ranging from photography, painting, jewelry making, and embroidery!
The food trucks were also great! The delicious smell of Korean BBQ from Chi’Lantro lingered and I was dying to try each and every place. Other than the great food, the singing hippies with their dreadlocks and sleeping pitbull happily played their banjos outside of Uncommon Objects, while tourists (aka me) stood in line to take picture with the ever so sweet “I love you so much” mural. If you’re one for weirdness, then Austin is the place to be.
I’ll be back soon, Austin.
